According to the "Automobile Retail Sales Report" prepared by Plaza Motors Corp., new-auto sales during the month of August, the latest numbers available, was 11,896 units, up 14.6% from same month last year, and 10% higher than July 2005. Year-to-date sales of 90,488 units reflect a 6.7% increase over the same period in 2004, when the industry sold 84,789 units. Despite concerns about the government's fiscal crisis, the effects of increased taxation on vehicles, as well as rising gasoline and toll charges, industry observers contend local auto sales are on track to match and even beat last year's record of 134,391 units sold;

The reason? Although attractive manufacturer discounts and special offers by local financing institutions certainly have enticed a large number of consumers to change their old car for a new one, the lack of a reliable public transportation system, plus the Urban Train's limited coverage area have turned the automobile into a necessity rather than a commodity in Puerto Rico. According to Department of Transportation & Public Works statistics, there are 2.5 million registered vehicles on the island. In fact, Puerto Rico has one of the highest concentrations of vehicles and paved roads per square mile in the world. Of the new units sold in August, 6,935, or 58.3% were cars and 4,961, or 41.7%, were sport-utility vehicles (SUVs), which include light trucks, pickups, and minivans.
