Renault, the French automaker that fled the U.S. market a decade ago with a reputation for poor-quality cars, plans to return by selling its cars under the Nissan brand name early in the next decade.

Renault also plans to build cars at Nissan's plants in Mexico and return to that market under its own banner.

The disclosures Tuesday provide examples of how the companies plan to make their new alliance work.

Nissan and Renault will combine their design, purchasing, manufacturing, and sales operations around the world. The goal is to capitalize on what the other does best.

Renault, which bought a 37 percent stake in the Japanese automaker last weekend, also announced a strategy for reducing Nissan's crippling debt levels by almost 70 percent within three years.

``The Nissan story could be a turnaround story in the same way, in the past, Renault has been a turnaround story,'' Louis Schweitzer, chairman and chief executive of Renault, told reporters Tuesday.

Just a few years ago, Renault was losing money and faced with too much capacity and a bloated cost structure. When it last competed in the American market, its lineup not only included the Medallion sedan and the subcompact Alliance but also the venerable Jeep brand it acquired in the takeover of American Motors and later sold to Chrysler.

The companies expect to save $568 million next year by combining their operations, but 86 percent of that savings is expected to come from squeezing suppliers, the executives told analysts Tuesday.

Just as badly as Nissan needs to cut costs, the company also needs to improve its sales of cars and trucks. Nissan, which builds the Altima sedan and Infiniti Q45 luxury car, saw its U.S. sales fall 14.7 percent last year.

Renault, which is still largely confined to Europe, also needs to expand sales of its Scenic micro-minivan and its Megane sedan.

So, the two companies plan to build and sell each other's cars.

Schweitzer said Renault had no plans to use Nissan's assembly plants in Tennessee, but he said, ``You may find a product (in the United States) that looks like a Renault, but they would be called Nissans.''

In Europe, Renault will take over most of Nissan's operations, so Nissan can focus its resources on rebuilding its business in North America and its home market of Japan. Renault, for example, which doesn't build any popular sport-utility vehicles might start selling Nissan's 4X4s under the Renault brand.

The window sticker is topped with the words "FOR SALE" in large 30 point type, so that drivers at a car-length's distance can read the sign. The Kelley Blue Book seal and suggested private party value follows, letting potential buyers know the seller had done their homework.

The sign also includes the year, make, model, mileage and condition of the car, along with a list of the vehicle's standard and upgraded features. In the center of the sign is a large box with a dollar sign for consumers to write in the amount they are seeking for the vehicle.

To print a personalized window sticker, go to kbb.com and click on the 'Private Party Values' link on the home page. Quickly select the year, make, model and condition of the car to be sold. When the final pricing report is displayed, just click on the 'Print For Sale Sign' link.

With rising gasoline prices and highway toll charges, one would think automobile sales, especially luxury vehicles, would be negatively affected, but that hasn't necessarily been the case in Puerto Rico, reports Caribbean Business (Oct. 26, 2005):

According to the "Automobile Retail Sales Report" prepared by Plaza Motors Corp., new-auto sales during the month of August, the latest numbers available, was 11,896 units, up 14.6% from same month last year, and 10% higher than July 2005. Year-to-date sales of 90,488 units reflect a 6.7% increase over the same period in 2004, when the industry sold 84,789 units. Despite concerns about the government's fiscal crisis, the effects of increased taxation on vehicles, as well as rising gasoline and toll charges, industry observers contend local auto sales are on track to match and even beat last year's record of 134,391 units sold;

The reason? Although attractive manufacturer discounts and special offers by local financing institutions certainly have enticed a large number of consumers to change their old car for a new one, the lack of a reliable public transportation system, plus the Urban Train's limited coverage area have turned the automobile into a necessity rather than a commodity in Puerto Rico. According to Department of Transportation & Public Works statistics, there are 2.5 million registered vehicles on the island. In fact, Puerto Rico has one of the highest concentrations of vehicles and paved roads per square mile in the world. Of the new units sold in August, 6,935, or 58.3% were cars and 4,961, or 41.7%, were sport-utility vehicles (SUVs), which include light trucks, pickups, and minivans.

Second Hand Car Dealers

How did we sell cars before the Internet? Newspapers and word of mouth, that’s how. Can you imagine anything more labor intensive? But then science discovered the Internet, and with it Craigslist, and BAM! People had an easy way to clear out their garages.

Craigslist KC — Kansas City or commonly known as K.C is the largest city in the United States, So people are struggling to sell/buy things via online. There is one most popular classified site that helps people to sell/buy things via online. It’s Craigslist

Last year, a few of us at Hagerty bought some inexpensive modern classics for a video shoot — a 1985 Mazda RX-7, a 1975 Chevy El Camino and a 1972 VW Beetle. Once the shoot was wrapped, we soon discovered that we had to do something with the cars. Instead of selling them, like we should have done, we found a nice warm garage, parked them, and let them appreciate. Now they are worth tens of dollars more than they were a year ago, and the time has come to pass them along to the next stewards.

With three cars to sell and the vast power of science’s Craigslist on which to sell them, we decided to vary our approach with each car, much the way you see varied sales approaches on Craigslist itself. Generally, people try to offload their old cars in one of three ways:

  1. From a “Here’s the analysis, look at the facts, this is an investment” standpoint.
  2. From a “Look how funny I am and look how funny you could be too if you buy my car” standpoint.
  3. From an “I don’t care about this car enough to give it more than seven words of description” standpoint.

Based purely on the amount of effort we felt each car deserved, we assigned them each their own strategy.

Thus, the RX-7 ad is designed to appeal to the collector who just wants the facts, the hard data.

The El Camino, funny car that it is, was assigned the ironic approach.

And the Beetle, well, it’s a Beetle, everybody knows what it is, and what more is there to say, really?

All three cars were priced roughly the same, which is to say the $3,000–$4,000 entry-level collectible range. And each was photographed appropriately, though in the case of the Beetle, that simply means a couple blurry, partially obscured shots. The only thing left to do, then, is to sit back and see which approach garners the most interest. And whether we can actually sell these things….

Which car do you think will sell first? Tell us in the comments.

To save ourselves from repeating this process, for our next 3 Guys video project, we’ll be selling the cars at Auctions America’s Fall Auburn sale next month. Check out the preview video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYsLVJek9hs

Car Buy And Sell

Rental cars have a reputation for being abused, which makes some people wary of buying one. However, the reputation is exaggerated, and rental car sales are in fact a legitimate and growing business. Rental cars do have abusive drivers on occasion, but they are well-maintained by the rental company and usually retired after less than two years of service. They are then inspected before being offered for sale. They also come with pretty good warranties, so far as used-car warranties go. If you're in the market for a new car, consider buying a rental.
